Gators bite Bobcats Walnut Grove beats Brookswood in Round 2 of the North/South Triple A senior boys rivalry. Brookswood Bobcats coach Larry Goldsack was humble in defeat on Tuesday. "Tonight Walnut Grove executed better and made their shots count," Goldsack said, after his Bobcats lost 81-71 to the Gators in senior boys basketball at Brookswood Secondary. "Tonight they were the better team." The game was filled with intensity, and Walnut Grove led by just one (59-58) after three quarters, but the Gators pulled away in the fourth quarter. While Goldsack didn't agree with some of the fouls called on his squad, he wasn't making any excuses. "There were some tough calls that took the momentum away from our game throughout the evening," Goldsack said. "But that doesn't matter in the end. If a team doesn't execute consistently at both ends of the floor, they should not expect to win." Brian Kim led the Gators with 35 points. Dean Suh added 22. Kyle Morton added 21 points for the Gators, while Kevin Lowe poured in 18.

The Kodiaks senior girls wanted a league won and they realized their goal. Credo avenged an earlier two-point loss to Southridge School with a 51-42 victory on Feb. 1. All five starters contributed to the scoring - Jacqueline Boot and Luanne Vreugdenhil each had 12 points. Lindsay Bisschop scored 10, Katrina Veldman added nine and Leah Vreugdenhil scored eight. Credo then finished 1-2 at the B.C. Christian Schools Championship last weekend at Abbotsford Christian High School. The girls opened with a 71-45 win over Fraser Valley Christian. Luanne Vreugdenhil lit it up in the first half with 15 points. She finished with 21. Teammate Katrina Veldman came alive in the second half with 15 points for a game total of 19. "The outcome was never in doubt," said Harry Moes, who co-coaches the team along with Janice Berends. The Kodiaks ran into a buzz saw in the second half when they played the No. 4 ranked Double A girls team in the province, Abbotsford Christian. The Abbotsford squad came away with a 62-51 victory. Grade 10 twins Leah and Luanne Vreugdenhil led all scorers with 17 points each. "The girls knew they were in tough but showed true grit and never gave up," Moes said. "All players ran to the last second but it was not quite enough." The loss stole some of the intensity of the players, who ended the tournament with a 62-58 loss to rivals Langley Christian Lightning. |
